ESCULTOR JAPONES TANADORI YAMAGUCHI
Tadanori Yamaguchi

Tadanori Yamaguchi (Osaka, 1970)

Yamaguchi establishes a constant dialogue with the world around him, as well as with the materials he works with. In this process, both the artist and the material are transformed while the spectators take part of the exchange by interacting with the pieces, discovering new realities.

With many of his works, the artist aims to bring his visual and tactile experiences to the material. His artistic practice, analytical thinking, and all his perceptions converge in the concept of “hatsuru”, a term that demonstrates how concepts that initially seem antagonistic should never be understood as opposites but as complementary. It advocates for the coexistence of opposites. This is the case with Japanese aesthetics and Western sculpture, which blend in his work, breaking the Japan-Spain dichotomy.

To understand his work and how he establishes these dialogues with nature, it is important to consider the Japanese learning methodology in which he was trained. In Japan’s stone carving workshops, students are expected to closely observe their master’s work and replicate his model. The goal is not merely to imitate but to develop a personal style based on interpreting others’ processes, techniques, and aesthetic debates. During the two and a half years he spent in his master Nakayama’s workshop, he not only learned to carve stone but also discovered the importance of solitude during the creative process, as well as how to project inwardly to understand his own artistic concerns. Yamaguchi firmly believes in the non-verbal dialogue between the action of the hand and the reaction of the material. With each strike he feels the vibrations of the stone, the sound it emits, and the cold or warmth of the element. For this reason, he rejects the prohibition of “touching” in his exhibitions, allowing the tactile exploration of his works. Through touch, the spectator participates in this exchange of energies, recreating the artist’s work process with his piece.
