Juan Genovés (Valencia, 1930 – Madrid, 2020)
To speak of Juan Genovés is to speak of the recent History of Spain. His firm belief in an ever-changing and compromised art led him to take part in some of the most significant cultural groups of the Spanish post-war scene: Los Siete (1949), Parpallós (1956) and Hondo (1960). Within the latter -which sought new figurative approaches to Informalism- Genovés developed an expressionist and provocative painting style.
Genovés always stressed the importance of artistic expression in his environment as one of the main agents of his development; and he would go on to live it daily, always active and tireless, working hours and hours in his studio. He was, from the beginning, a restless painter concerned with the need to renew Spanish art, as well as the role of an artist and art itself in a society. In his work, formal experimentation converged with a strong social awareness and a great interest in the renewal of figurative methodologies.
During his last phase, his work turns towards research on the static movement in painting, using the crowd as the starting point to talk about the challenge involving painting and visual rhythm.
Since 2015, Genovés adds to his production intervened editioned works. This technique, which quickly became very representative of the artist, consists of ten digital copies of Giclée on Hahnemühle paper with an important distinction: each one of them has been intervened with various materials, signed and numbered by the artist himself, which makes each of the works -even in the same series- different and unique.
Throughout his illustrious career, Juan Genovés was awarded, among others, with the Honourable Mention at the XXXIII Venice Biennial in 1966, the Gold Medal at the VI San Marino International Biennial in 1967, the International Marzotto Prize in 1968, the Spanish National Art Prize in 1984, the Valencian Art Prize in 2002 and the Gold Medal for Merits in Fine Arts by the Spanish Ministry of Culture in 2005.
