Josep Guinovart (Barcelona, 1927-2007)
Catalan painter, draftsman and etcher, Guinovart is an essential artist to understand the Spanish art history of the second half of the 20th century.
His artistic career begins with a figurative stage that evolves to a social thematic and then digs into abstraction and informalism. In 1957 Guinovart began to experiment in a style close to assemblage and collage by incorporating into his works objects as boxes, cans, burnt wood or trashed elements.
In the 60’s Guinovart leaves subjective poetry of informalism and his works are characterized by the expressive content that he tries to convey through the use of symbols and colorful strokes.
His work has been featured internationally, and is found in important collections and museums such as: Modern Art Museum of Barcelona, the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid, Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao, Fine Arts Museum of Long Island, New York.
In addition, has been awarded prizes such as: the Eina Prize in Barcelona, the ACCA award of the art critic awarded by the Catalan Art Critics Association (ACCA), order of the merit Cultural Gabriela Mistral of the Government of Chile, Artes Plásticas Medalla Morera del Museo de Arte Jaume Morera Award in Lleida. In addition, he is appointed Academic of Honor by the Royal Catalan Academy of Fine Arts of Sant Jordi.
